Fractures in children FAQ
- How are fractures in children different from adults?
- A child's bone is flexible, so instead of breaking through it may bend or buckle on one side only. Healing is faster and a degree of deformity can correct itself with growth, but a fracture crossing the growth plate can lead to a difference in length or angle later, so it needs to be checked.
- Is a cast enough?
- If the bone is well aligned and stable, a cast is enough. If it is displaced or the fracture involves the growth plate, a reduction procedure or surgery to hold it in place may be needed.
- Do we need to come back after it has healed?
- If the injury was near a growth plate, we keep checking for a period after the bone has united to see whether a deformity appears as the child grows. We will tell you the follow-up interval at the consultation, based on the site and the child's age.
