Ankle · Foot

- A bump and pain at the base of the big toe
- Discomfort in shoes
- Toes overlapping
Causes
Family history and genetic factors · High heels and other narrow shoes · Flat feet or a wide forefoot · Rheumatoid arthritis or neuromuscular disease
How it is diagnosed
History and physical examination — The specialist takes your symptoms, medical history and daily habits, then examines you to reach a diagnosis.
X-ray — X-rays pass through the body and the differences in shadow they leave are used for diagnosis.
Ultrasound — Ultrasound uses no radiation and is quick and painless, which makes it easy on patients.
MRI — High-resolution imaging of what X-ray cannot show: soft tissue, muscle, ligament and cartilage, along with nerves and vessels.
Hallux valgus (bunion)
Orthotic brace
Injection therapy
Shockwave therapy
Surgical treatment
Ankle · foot FAQ
- Will changing shoes fix a bunion?
- Shoes will not undo the angle a bone has already taken. Wide-toe shoes and corrective insoles help reduce pain and slow the progression. If the deformity is severe enough to make walking difficult, or it starts pressing on the other toes, corrective surgery is considered.
- I keep rolling my ankle — is it just a habit?
- It is less a habit than a sign that the ligament stretched in the first sprain never healed properly, leaving the ankle unstable. Repeated sprains can damage the cartilage, so we check the ligament and consider strength and balance rehabilitation or ligament reconstruction.
- How is plantar fasciitis treated?
- Most cases are treated without surgery. Stretching, foot orthoses and extracorporeal shockwave therapy are combined according to the condition. How long recovery takes depends on how long the symptoms have lasted and how active you are; we will explain this at your consultation.
